AI search for Shopify stores: how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI answers
· 3 min read · MAALI team
More shoppers now ask an AI assistant instead of typing keywords into a search box: "What's a good linen dress for hot weather?" or "Which planter is best for a monstera?" The answer often names a few products or stores. Getting into those answers is sometimes called generative engine optimization, or GEO.
It's a new and fast-changing area, and nobody outside these companies knows exactly how each system chooses what to mention. But the basics are clear enough to act on, and most of them are the same things that help with regular search.
How AI answers find products
AI assistants and AI search features generally draw on two things:
- What they learned during training, from the public web.
- What they find when they search or browse at the time of the question.
For a small store, the second matters most. When an assistant searches the web to answer a shopping question, it reads pages that rank, product pages, reviews and articles, and summarises what it finds. If your pages clearly answer the question, you have a chance to be included.
What you can do today
1. Make your product pages easy to understand
AI systems summarise pages. Clear, factual pages are easier to summarise accurately:
- Say what the product is, who it's for, and what makes it different, near the top.
- List the facts people compare: materials, dimensions, sizes, compatibility, care.
- Use plain words. "Pre-washed linen, relaxed fit, sizes XS to 3XL" beats "elevated essentials for your journey".
2. Answer the questions shoppers ask assistants
People ask assistants full questions. A blog post or guide that answers "how to choose a planter size for a monstera" clearly and honestly is exactly the kind of page an assistant can draw on. See Shopify blog ideas that bring in shoppers.
3. Use structured data
Shopify themes usually include product structured data (name, price, availability, reviews), which helps machines read your pages. Check that your theme outputs it, especially if you've customised product templates.
4. Be mentioned elsewhere
Assistants often cite reviews, comparison articles, forums and press. Genuine mentions on other sites, such as a feature in a niche blog, real customer reviews or a listing in a relevant directory, help assistants see your store as a real option. Earn them; don't fake them.
5. Don't block the crawlers you want
Your robots.txt controls which bots can read your store. Some stores block AI crawlers without realising it, for example through an app or a copied setting. Decide deliberately which ones you allow.
6. Keep facts consistent
If your prices, sizes or shipping policies differ between your store, marketplaces and social profiles, assistants may repeat the wrong one. Keep them in sync.
What doesn't work
- Keyword stuffing or hidden text aimed at AI. It makes pages worse for people and is likely to be ignored or penalised.
- Fake reviews or invented claims. Besides being dishonest and often illegal, assistants increasingly cross-check sources.
- Chasing every new trick. The systems change often. Clear, useful, accurate pages hold up through the changes.
