Shopify collection pages: the SEO quick win most stores miss

October 20, 2026 · 2 min read · MAALI team

When someone searches "linen dresses" or "ceramic planters", they usually want to browse, not to see one product. That's what a collection page is for. Yet on many Shopify stores, collection pages are just a title and a grid of products, with nothing for search engines to read.

Why collections matter for search

Product pages are good at ranking for specific searches: a product name, a model, a very particular style. Collection pages are better placed for the broader category searches that bring in shoppers who haven't decided yet.

Those searches are competitive, so a bare grid rarely ranks. Search engines need text to understand what a page is about and who it's for, and a page that only lists product names gives them very little.

What to add to every collection

1. A short intro at the top

Two to four sentences that say what's in the collection and who it's for, in the words a shopper would use:

Linen dresses for warm days, in relaxed fits that layer easily. Every dress is pre-washed, so it's soft from the first wear and won't shrink.

Add it under Products → Collections, in the collection's Description. Most themes show it above the products. Keep it short so the products stay visible on mobile.

2. A specific title

The collection title is often the page's main heading. "Dresses" is fine for navigation; for search, "Linen Dresses" or "Summer Linen Dresses" says more. Set the Page title in Search engine listing if you want the browser title to be more specific than the menu label.

3. A meta description that sells the browse

Something like: "Relaxed linen dresses in 8 colours, pre-washed for softness. Free returns on every order." Mention the range, a benefit, and a reason to click.

4. Helpful text further down (optional)

For your most important collections, some themes let you add a section below the products: a short buying guide, how to choose a size, or answers to common questions. This is where a little more text can help, without pushing products down the page.

Common collection problems

  • Duplicate collections. Two collections with nearly the same products and titles compete with each other. Merge them or make each one clearly different.
  • Automated collections with no description. Smart collections are convenient, but they still need an intro.
  • Thin "all products" pages. Fine for browsing, but don't expect them to rank. Put your effort into specific category collections.
  • Tag-filtered URLs. Filtered views of a collection can create many near-duplicate pages. Shopify normally handles this with canonical tags; avoid linking to filtered URLs from your menus.

Link collections from your content

Articles and product pages are good places to link to a collection, for example "see all our linen dresses". Internal links help shoppers keep browsing, and help search engines see which pages matter most.

How MAALI helps

MAALI's free SEO check samples your collection pages and flags the ones with no description, along with missing meta descriptions and duplicate titles. When the Writer drafts an article, it links only to your real collections and products, so new articles send readers to the right category pages.
